Read the passage

Devon wanted to win the science fair more than anything. He spent weeks building a tall volcano, but he never asked his teammate Sam what he thought. On the day of the fair, the volcano leaned and spilled before it could erupt. Sam quietly mentioned that he had warned Devon the base was too thin. Devon felt his cheeks grow warm. The next year, Devon listened to every one of Sam's ideas, and together they built a model that worked perfectly. They did not win first place, but Devon learned something better.

Tips for parents

  • Ask your child to tell you the story in three sentences before answering. Retelling builds comprehension faster than rereading.
  • When they miss a vocabulary question, have them find the word in the passage and guess its meaning from the sentences around it.
  • Let them use the read-aloud button freely. Hearing fluent reading while following the text is real practice, not a shortcut.
