Grade 5 Science Practice

Fun, 5-question daily quests for grade 5 kids (ages 10–11), read out loud and aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Each science quest asks five questions about the world kids can see: living things, weather, forces, matter, and Earth and space, each with a short explanation of why.

  1. Question 1 · Matter and properties

Which property could help you identify a mystery material?

    • A. How you feel about it
    • B. Whether it is attracted to a magnet
    • C. Its name
    • D. Who owns it
    Show answer

    B. Whether it is attracted to a magnet — Properties like magnetism, hardness, and color help identify materials. Being magnetic is a property you can test!

  2. Question 2 · Conservation of matter

You dissolve 5 g of salt into 95 g of water. What is the mass of the salt water?

    • A. 0 g
    • B. 100 g
    • C. 95 g
    • D. 5 g
    Show answer

    B. 100 g — Matter is conserved, so the masses add up: 5 g of salt plus 95 g of water equals 100 g.

  3. Question 3 · Mixtures and changes

Which sign tells you a NEW substance has formed (a chemical change)?

    • A. You warm it slightly without other change
    • B. You move the material to a new shelf
    • C. You cut the material into pieces
    • D. A gas bubbles up and a color change appears
    Show answer

    D. A gas bubbles up and a color change appears — Bubbling gas and a color change are clues that a new substance formed in a chemical change.

  4. Question 4 · Food webs energy

In a food web, the arrows show:

    • A. How animals are named
    • B. The direction that energy and matter move
    • C. Which animal is the fastest
    • D. Where animals sleep
    Show answer

    B. The direction that energy and matter move — Arrows in a food web point from the organism being eaten to the one that eats it, showing energy flow.

  5. Question 5 · Plants need air water

Most of the material a plant uses to build its body comes from:

    • A. The pot it grows in
    • B. The Moon's light
    • C. The soil it is planted in
    • D. Carbon dioxide gas from the air and water
    Show answer

    D. Carbon dioxide gas from the air and water — Plants build most of their mass from air (carbon dioxide) and water, not mainly from soil.

Tips for parents

  • Pick one question from today's quest and test it at home: drop two objects, watch a shadow move, or check what dissolves in water.
  • Ask "what do you think will happen?" before reading the explanation. Making a prediction is the heart of science.
  • Keep a short wonder list of questions your child asks during the week and look one up together on the weekend.
